China IP Management and Commercialisation Achievement
- 29 Jul 2022
China is a new world leading country in intellectual property (IP) protection. Experience from the biggest IP producer in the world will give a different perspective from Japan and Korea in term of IP and commercialisation process.
Malaysian university, research institution or other agencies that expanding the IP exploitation should learn a lot from China through China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) that can manage more than 1 million patent/year, technology transfer and successful stories from industries in China that can be our motivation for us.
UPM, have more than 2000 IP, recognized as best intellectual property management (organization category) for 2008, 2014 , 2016 and 2017 in Malaysia by the Intellectual Property
Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), hope that can much be benefited from the experience from China.
Until now, UPM has commercialised 213 IP or technologies in various fields, especially in the agriculture industry.
More than 2,000 IP/technologies developed by UPM`s researcher, the percentage of successful technology transfer to industry is quiet average,
but still not favour from Malaysian public community as a biggest stakeholder in Malaysia.
There is more demand to look a lot of products from University`s technology go to the marketplace. Due to current economic condition, budget allocation to manage all the technology transfer activities including promotion and marketing of IP reduced drastically from Malaysian Ministry of Higher
Education.
Slow economic growth situation is also challenging to the industry to invest in our technologies. Yet, we still need a best and effective strategy to get an involvement of industry to
commercialise our IP in this challenging situation.
The motivation to learn on how China prepared for the readiness of the technology and promote to get interest from the industry to commercialised IP.
As a tremendous achievement of IP protection, implementation of IP policy enforcement and government supporting facilities on IP, thus we want to explore the perspective of the industry in China in term of commercialising the university R&D and the best practices in promoting IP to the industry in China.
