JAYUM is the inaugural chairholder of the Tan Sri Empiang Jabu Research Chair (TSEJRC) in Dayak Women’s Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), appointed on 1 November 2019 for a 3-years term.
He is the former Founding Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Management and Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus, Sarawak, between 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021. He is the former 15th Distinguished Tun Abdul Razak Chair at the Center for International Studies and Distinguished Visiting Professor of Political Science in the Department of Political Science, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, USA (2015-2017).
He joined as an academic Universiti Putra Malaysia in 1982. Over almost forty years in the academia, he has authored more than 300 publications comprising entries in encyclopedias, books, chapters in books, teaching modules and guides, journal articles, conference papers and research reports; successfully supervised 69 graduate students from various foreign countries; and served as external examiners to not less than 52 graduate theses from various universities.
Jayum has held various advisory appointments in government departments and agencies including in some non-governmental organisations. He has also held various visiting positions at local and international universities including such as at: University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus (2012); Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (2010); Open University Malaysia (2011-2013); Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) (1996/97); Northern University of Bangladesh (2010); University of Flinders, Australia (2008); Korea Foundation, Seoul (2007); and University of Hull, UK (2004 & 2005).
Jayum’s recent appointments are as follows: consultant to Myanmar School of Politics (MySop), Yangon, Myanmar (October-December 2020); member of Advisory Council on National Unity, Ministry of National Unity, Prime Minister’s Department, Putrajaya for a period of two years, July 2020 - June 2022, and member of Consultative Council on Public Security and Order, Ministry of Home Affairs, Malaysia, February 2020 - December 2022.
