Dr. Shahrizim (Dr Reese) is a senior lecturer in the Department of Biology. His training is in medical Microbiology and Lichens taxonomy. He also had training in Algae taxonomy, culture and applications (phycology).

His previous research focused on the bioremediation of wastewater, production of high quality cellulose from algae as well as metagenomics of epiphytic bacteria on nuisance freshwater algae.

By using metagenomics, several identifying genes were identified in promoting bioremediation and nutrient cycling in algae. His current interest is continuing the applications of metagenomics in algae and bacteria in naturally occurring freshwater and marine ecosystems.

He is also interested in seasonal biodiversity of algae in relation to nutrient and environmental conditions. The applications of this research may be used in fields of bioremediation and also algae production.

CURRENT RESEARCH INTEREST:
• Biodiversity and metagenomics of algae and bacteria based on Next Generation Sequencing Platform
• Epiphytic communities dynamics of bacteria on algae
• Algae ecology and biodiversity association with physico-chemical properties of the environment.
• Bioremediation using algae.
• Production of high quality cellulose from freshwater algae.
• Implications of algae to human health • Algae production for food • Lichens biodiversity
