Borneo Native Festival (BNF) 2025
- 25 May 2025
Event Title: Borneo Native Festival (BNF) 2025
Date: 23 – 25 May 2025
Venue: Central Market, Kuala Lumpur
Role: Visitor / Cultural Engagement
The Borneo Native Festival (BNF) 2025, held from 23 to 25 May at Central Market, Kuala Lumpur, was a vibrant celebration of the rich and diverse cultures of Sabah and Sarawak. Coinciding with Pesta Kaamatan and Hari Gawai, the festival brought together the traditions, art, and spirit of Borneo’s native communities in a lively, public setting.
Attending as a visitor with Melanau Chinese Bidayuh heritage, the event was a deeply meaningful experience. It offered an opportunity to reconnect with cultural roots, appreciate the beauty of Borneo’s diversity, and engage with fellow East Malaysians in a space filled with traditional performances, handcrafted goods, native delicacies, and cultural storytelling.
From the rhythmic beats of the gong ensemble to the intricate beadwork and textiles on display, each aspect of the festival reflected the pride and resilience of Borneo’s indigenous peoples. I had the chance to converse with artisans, observe cultural demonstrations, and reflect on the shared heritage that connects various Dayak and native groups across generations.
BNF 2025 was more than just a celebration, it was a living archive of culture, identity, and unity. It reminded us of the importance of preserving and sharing our heritage not only among our communities but with the wider Malaysian society. The festival successfully created a platform for cultural appreciation, education, and pride, making it a memorable and inspiring experience.
Wishing everyone a joyful Pesta Kaamatan and Hari Gawai, may we continue to cherish, preserve, and celebrate our cultural heritage for generations to come.
